Elaeagnus ebbingei Compacta-Compact Oleaster, shrub form

Elaeagnus 'Compacta' is a compact Oleaster, a smaller and denser version of the vigorous evergreen shrub, Elaeagnus ebbingei. It has silver-tinged glossy green leaves which are speckled and silvery beneath. The highly fragrant creamy white flowers in autumn could go unnoticed were it not for the remarkable scent. They are followed by orange speckled fruits. Grown as a natural shrub form, this bush is hardy and thrives in most soils in sun or shade. Makes an excellent hedge or ideal for screening.

An evergreen shrub with foliage that stays roughly the same all year round. The leaves are shades of green with a silvery sheen and there are often white speckles. An easy maintenance plant for the garden, the ultimate height of this Oleaster is around 2.5 metres with a spread of up to 2m. Elaeagnus ebbingei is now officially known as Elaeagnus x submacrophylla. This hybrid shrub was discovered in 1929 by a Dutch horticulturalist. He sowed seed from several Elaeagnus species growing next to one another. These included E. macrophylla and E. pungens. The hybrid was given the epithet ebbingei, honouring J.W.E. Ebbinge, and the name E. × ebbingei was widely used until it was realized that the name with priority was E. × submacrophylla, published by Camille Servettaz in 1909.
Container plants will keep, if necessary, for many months in their containers prior to planting. If you receive the plants during the spring or summer when they will be growing, then it will be best to plant within a week or two making sure that the plants are kept well watered in the containers until planting and also that they are protected or supported to prevent them from blowing over and damaging branches. If you receive the plants during the winter then they can be kept until early spring before planting with occasional watering to prevent them drying out. Again, protect them from being blown over. They will not be harmed by frost but do not attempt to plant them in the ground when they, or the ground, are frozen. Take care to plant at the correct depth so that the surface of the rootball is at the same level as the ground. They will require watering during the first summer to prevent the ground from drying out. Take care not to over or under water - you can tell by feeling the soil to see if it is dry. Trees should be securely staked to prevent them from rocking and breaking off new root growth.
