SPRING 2025: English Woodlands will shortly have a vacancy for a member of the sales team, who will also work as nursery assistant.

Job Title: Sales / Nursery Assistant

Location: Heathfield, East Sussex TN21 0UG

Reporting to: Sales Director

Salary: 22-24K according to experience

English Woodlands is a long-established specialist supplier of trees, shrubs and accessories to both trade and private clients across southern England. The company has a reputation for the supply of high-quality plants, supported by helpful and expert advice.

This is an opportunity to join a team of 13 staff in this successful company. The role involves working in a small team of 5 people, focussing primarily on the sales aspects of the business: meeting and greeting, telephone sales, also processing quotations and orders. You will also undertake work as necessary outside on the nursery during the low sales season (April-September).  It includes helping with general nursery tasks such as watering, pruning, feeding etc.

Required Skills

The nursery is seeking a person with an interest in trees and shrubs and general horticulture/gardening. You should be comfortable working both indoors and out and should be a practical, flexible, team member who wants to learn. Relevant experience / qualifications are preferred, but not necessary. A person wanting to train and to gain qualifications in horticulture would be considered. The following skills are preferred:

  • Some level of plant knowledge, preferably including trees.
  • Good communication and inter-personal skills – customer friendly
  • Computer use is required for which training will be provided.
  • Applicants must be physically fit and happy to do work on the nursery
  • Need to be able to fit in with and work with others as part of a small team

Hours of work

Hours are likely to average around 40 hours per week and will include working on Saturdays with a week day off.

Holidays

The company offers a minimum of 23 days holiday per year (pro rata) plus bank holidays, to be taken outside peak periods of spring and autumn

Pension

The company operates a contributory pension scheme to which employees are auto-enrolled in accordance with current government requirements.

 

The nursery is proud to have gained and retained the Plant Healthy status, an important certification scheme created by Defra as part of the Plant Biosecurity Strategy for Great Britain.
